Fortnite is stricter than most, and that changes the advice
For a lot of games the ornate ꧁༺ ༻꧂ frames are worth trying first because they usually work. Fortnite is not one of them. Display names are validated by Epic at the account level, not by the game client, and the permitted set is narrow. If you arrived here wanting the elaborate frames specifically, the honest answer is that they will most likely be refused, and the styles worth your time are the ones marked safe or usually fine.
That is not a dead end. Small capitals, mathematical bold and the spaced style all read as letters to a validator while looking nothing like the default, and they render on console as well as on PC. That combination is what actually survives.
Console fonts are the real constraint
A large part of the Fortnite player base is on console, and console system fonts cover far less of Unicode than a phone does. A name using Tibetan or Javanese characters may look perfect while you set it up on a laptop and appear as a row of empty rectangles to half the lobby. You never see that from your own screen, which is what makes it worth knowing in advance.
The practical test is to send the candidate to a friend on the platform you care about and ask what they see. It takes seconds and it is the only reliable check, because rendering depends on the reader’s device rather than on anything you control.
Symbols that are letters
There is a useful distinction hiding in these lists. Some of what looks decorative is genuinely a symbol, such as ★ or ➤. Other characters are letters that merely look unusual: ᴀ is a small capital A, 𝐀 is a mathematical bold A. Validators that check "is this a letter" accept the second group and reject the first. When a name is refused, replacing symbols with styled letters is the single most effective fix.
Common questions
Does Fortnite allow symbols in display names?
Epic restricts what a display name may contain and enforces it when you save the change in your account settings rather than in the game itself. Plain letters, numbers and a small set of punctuation are reliable. Ornate frame characters are usually refused, which is why the safe styles here matter more for Fortnite than for most games.
Why do I see symbols in other players’ names then?
Several reasons overlap. Some names were set years ago under looser rules and were never revalidated. Some players are on console or third-party accounts with different validation. And some of what looks like a symbol is a Unicode letter that passes the letter check, such as small capitals, which is exactly what the "usually fine" styles here use.
Will a styled name break my account?
No. It is ordinary text, so nothing mechanical changes. The realistic risks are practical rather than technical: a name nobody can type is a name nobody can add, and Epic can require a change if a display name breaks its naming policy.

Consoles use a narrower system font than phones, so exotic blocks are the first thing to fall back to empty boxes. If you play mostly on console, or your friends do, stay with the safe and usually-fine styles rather than the ornate frames.
