The standard is explicit that they are not intended as a substitute for typographic styling. Using them for decoration works, but you are borrowing notation, and every downstream system that cares about meaning rather than shape will treat your bold letters as maths symbols.

That has three practical consequences. Search does not match them, so a bolded keyword in your bio is invisible to the platform search. Text-to-speech announces them unpredictably, ranging from the correct letter to a full technical character name to nothing at all. And any system that runs case-insensitive comparison or spellchecking will not recognise your words. None of that stops you using bold, but it does argue for bolding a few words rather than everything.

If you need both weight and a line, the combined options above apply the mark after the substitution, so the underline or strikethrough sits on the bold glyph rather than beside it. And if you are pasting into a chat app or an editor that supports its own bold markup, use that instead. Native formatting is genuinely better in every way except portability, and portability is the only thing Unicode bold has going for it.
